Supported Internships
What is a Supported Internship?
A Supported Internship is a specialist, work‑based study programme designed for young people aged 16–24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Its purpose is to help them gain the skills, experience and confidence they need to move into paid employment.
Supported Internships focus on learning in a real workplace, rather than only in a classroom. Young people spend the majority of their week with an employer, gaining hands‑on experience that matches their strengths, interests and long‑term career goals.
How the Programme Works
Real Work Experience
Interns take part in meaningful work placements where they learn practical job skills, workplace routines and expectations in a supportive environment.
Job Coach Support
Every intern is supported by a trained job coach.
They:
- Teach tasks step by step
- Break activities into manageable stages
- Support closely at first, then gradually reduce help as independence grows
- Work with both the employer and education provider to ensure the placement is successful
Personalised Learning
Alongside their workplace experience, interns follow a tailored study programme that may include English, maths or employability skills, depending on their needs.
Programme Length
Most Supported Internships last six months to a year, allowing young people time to grow in confidence and develop the skills needed for the workplace.
Who Can Take Part?
Supported Internships are for young people who:
- Are aged 16–24
- Have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
- Want to move into paid work
- Learn best through practical, hands‑on experiences
What Is the Goal?
The aim of a Supported Internship is simple: to help young people with SEND move into sustainable, paid employment, increasing their confidence, independence and future opportunities.
